Looking for a surefire winner? Choose one of these top performers from rigorous plant trials
The Chicago Botanic Garden ’s evaluation program has looked at about 10,000 different plants during the past 30 years , most of which were include in one of the more than a hundred comparative trials , both big and small , that we have done so far . If you have interpret my articles over the years , you have a go at it that relative trials are the best style to measure one plant ’s meritoriousness against those of other similar plants . But not every flora terminate up in a comparative run ; stand - alone plants have become more vulgar in our trials due to generous support from plant introduction computer programme and independent nurseries . Sometimes these individual plants whet my appetency for more , which leads to a larger study . That was the caseful for gentians ( Gentianaspp . , Zones 3–9 ) and mountain hydrangea ( Hydrangea serratacvs . , Zones 6–9 ) . Whether they are standalone plants or 1 from an unreported comparative run , think of the accompany plants as my “ best of the rest”—a selection of outstanding perennials we ’ve pass judgment in late twelvemonth that for one reason or another have n’t made it onto the page ofFine Gardeninguntil now .
Trial Parameters
USDA Hardiness Zone:5b
How long : lower limit of four years
Conditions : Full sun ; well - drained , alkaline , clay - loam territory

give care : We provided minimal care , take into account the plant to flourish or fail under born conditions . In addition to observing their ornamental trait , we monitor the plants to see how well they grew and adapted to environmental and land weather condition while keep on a close eye on any disease or pest job and assessing plant injury or losses over wintertime .
Compact and Carefree Choices to Liven Up the Front of the Border
Long-lived and compact
‘ Rosie Posie ’ hyssop(Agastache‘Rosie Posie’)Zones:5b–8Size:22 inches tall and 24 inches wideConditions : Full Sunday ; intermediate to dry , well - drained soilBloom time period : Early summer to mid - autumnFlower color and sizing : Purple - pink , 1 inch long
winter hyssop has been challenging for us , which is the reason we ’ve never done a gravid test of them . Who need that heartache ? The blue- and purple - flowered varieties are pretty dependable , but it ’s the ones that bloom in sunglasses of pink , red , orangish , or scandalmongering that tantalize me . Imagine my delight when‘Rosie Posie ’ hyssopsurvived one wintertime , then another , and then another . Hot pink blossoms beautifully paired with dark Battle of Magenta calyx create an intense flowered show — and as with many mint congenator , the calyx holds its colour long after the prime falls off . nonstop flight from early summertime into twilight , piles of vibrant flowers are visited by hummingbirds and pollinator of all grade insignia . The hopeful dark-green farewell are scrumptiously scented and disease spare , and the ball - shaped riding habit stays compact throughout the summertime . While ‘ Rosie Posie ’ thrived in full sun in our less than perfect soils , well - drained soils are recommended for hyssop to endure and look their better .
Looks great with almost anything
‘ Millenium ’ decorative allium(Allium‘Millenium’)Zones:5–9Size:20 inches tall and 13 inch wideConditions : Full Dominicus ; dry to average , well - drain soilBloom period : other summer to early autumnFlower color and sizing : Rose - purple , 1¾ inches wide
A few years ago on a suggestion , ‘ Millenium ’ cosmetic allium — unknown to me at the sentence — was brought in to compare to ‘ Summer Beauty ’ and ‘ summertime - Peek - A - Boo ’ . I did n’t know then that ‘ Millenium ’ was already widely praised by gardeners ; eventually it was honored as Perennial Plant of the Year in 2018 . ‘ Millenium’—misspelling aside — is a phenomenal perennial with flushed purple midsummer bloom that blow like all-day sucker above bunch of morose unripened , strappy leaves . The starburst - alike seed heads hold up well for a recollective metre before eventually crumbling . ( Seedlings were not uncommon , so consider deadheading if that ’s a worry . ) Garden associate for stocky ‘ Millenium ’ are almost sempiternal , but it merge brilliantly with billowy calamint ( Calamintha nepeta , Zones 5–7 ) in the trials . Both are pollinator way stations too .
Tidy and reliable
‘ Paint the Town Magenta ’ pinks(Dianthus‘Paint the Town Magenta’)Zones:4–9Size:8 inches tall and 14 in wideConditions : Full sun to partial shadowiness ; well - drain soilBloom full stop : Midspring to former summertime ( rebloom)Flower color and size of it : Magenta , 1¼ in all-embracing
Like hyssop , pinks are often short - lived in our heavy soils , so growing them is almost a dare , but succeeding is a triumph . On my continuing quest to find pinks that grow well for us , I was thrilled to discover‘Paint the Town Magenta ’ , which is both pretty and exceedingly true . For over a month beginning in midspring , vibrant magenta flowers full blanket the plants . When flowering ends and spend blossoms drop away neatly , attractive blue - green , pointy leafage are the background for the smattering of flower that pop up repeatedly into fall . The blue , mound wont stays sizable at all clock time , never opening to show its cap or run out in wet , humid weather . ‘ Paint the Town Magenta ’ has held its own for five year in our periodically fuddled site , but well - debilitate soils are secure .
Repeat blooms with no deadheading
‘ bright blue Rush ’ geranium(Geranium‘Azure Rush’)Zones:5–9Size:14 column inch marvellous and 39 inches wideConditions : Full sun to fond shadeBloom period : Late spring to mid - autumnFlower colouring material and size : illumination blue , 1½ column inch wide
Rozanne geranium ( Geranium‘Gerwat ’ , Zones 5–8 ) took the horticulture world by violent storm a while back , but now it is a sport of Rozanne that is getting some clip in the sunshine . ‘ Azure kick ’ embodies the greatest qualities of long - blooming Rozanne , but its lighter blue flowers with their ghostlike eye are a magic preeminence . Being sterile,‘Azure Rush’is stud with flowers endlessly from late spring to hoarfrost , and it does n’t require deadheading to push repeat bloom . Both geraniums have aromatic dissected leaves and mounding use , although shorter internodes on ‘ bright blue Rush ’ think that it rambles less than Rozanne and is more compact—14 inch tall and 39 inches wide , compare to 20 inches tall and 60 inch wide . ‘ Azure spate ’ is adaptable to various light vulnerability in average soils , so it can easily bridge over the transition zone between full sun and wanton spectre in the landscape painting .
A stunning North American native
Indian pink(Spigelia marilandica)Zones:5–9Size:24 in marvellous and 22 inches wideConditions : Full Dominicus to light specter ; middling to moist , fertile , well - drained soilBloom menses : Early summertime to late summerFlower gloss and size of it : flushed and white-livered , 2¼ inches long
establish the nativeIndian pinktook multiple attempt , but it was well worth the painful sensation of those loss once we come through . Exotically vivid red flowers , to 2 inches long , flower in other summer and then again in late summer . From above , the bloom look like brainy yellow stars , but from the side , their slender trumpet shape is evident . The whimsical flowers look like little soldiers lined up along the one - sided clustering . Indian pink keeps a refreshful feeling all summer , with dark green leaf and a shaggy-haired clumping habit to 24 inches tall and wide . In sun or light shade , Indian pink likes moist , well - drain soils , and it will seed around once established ; I was giddy when we discovered seedlings in 2019 . This retiring outflow , I bring ‘ Little Redhead ’ ( Spigelia marilandica‘Little Redhead ’ , Zones 6–9 ) , a new vegetatively propagate selection with improved uniformness that looks promising already .
Larger-Scale Beauties Have a Strong Presence Wherever They Are Planted
Robust and disease resistant
‘ American Gold Rush ’ dim - eyed Susan(Rudbeckia‘American Gold Rush’)Zones:4–9Size:27 inches tall and 40 inches wideConditions : Full sun ; average to moist , well - drain soilBloom period : Midsummer to mid - autumnFlower color and size : Golden yellow , 2¼ inches wide
Looking for originality in a perennial that come with only white-livered flush may seem like a farsighted shot , but I think‘American Gold Rush ’ fatal - eyed Susanis that invention . Like other black - eyed Susans , ‘ American Gold Rush ’ features golden yellow efflorescence — here with gently loll ray florets and a touch of Bolshevik encircling the dark cones . The haired light green leaves and stems set it apart , giving the industrial plant an argent cast but , more important , helping keep Septoria folio bit at bay tree ; this disease can be devastating to the ubiquitous ‘ Goldsturm ’ and refer black - eyed Susans . From midsummer to mid - fall , the silver foliage under a mantle of soft halcyon flowers is incandescent in bright sunlight . The uniformness of the robust , mounded wont was telling , never open or wedge in the long bloom time of year . After all the bee and butterflies have done their work , goldfinches feed like B. B. King on the bountiful come . ( Be otiose like me and leave behind the stems up all wintertime for them . ) ‘ American Gold Rush ’ is one of the best genus Rudbeckia — and perhaps one of the best perennials — I have ever evaluated . And it looks like I am not alone in my appraisal : It was an All - America Selections winner in the 2019 Herbaceous Perennial Trials .
Intense foliage color before and after flowering
‘ Blackbeard ’ penstemon(Penstemon‘Blackbeard’)Zones:4–8Size:34 inch tall and 24 inches wideConditions : Full sun ; dry to average , well - drained soilBloom period : Late spring to early summertime ( rebloom)Flower people of color and size : Pale purpleness , 1 inch long
I ’ve been around long enough to call up the excitement when maroon - leave ‘ Husker Red ’ penstemon ( Penstemon digitalis‘Husker Red ’ , Zones 3–8 ) was introduced , as well as the frustration over time as deficient color forms were substituted in its billet . Today there ’s a Modern class of swart penstemons that wo n’t let down , such as ‘ Dark Towers ’ , ‘ Pocahontas ’ , ‘ Midnight Masquerade ’ , and ‘ Blackbeard ’ . Each has merit , but‘Blackbeard’stands out for its exceptionally dark burgundy leave and stem . The foliage colouring material lightens during the blooming period , which is about a month in late spring to other summertime , but darkens again when blossom ends . Tubular , lilac - purple prime with white throats are pretty and profuse , but to me they are simply the means to get to the shining burgundy fruits . I ’m guessing that all the pollinator that crowd this beautiful nativar may not see my distributor point of opinion . yield colour and texture complement and counterpoint nicely with colorful , flaccid - textured sens such as little blue stem ( Schizachyrium scoparium‘Carousel ’ , Zones 3–9 ) or fountain grass ( Pennisetum alopecuroides‘Red Head ’ , Zones 5–9 ) . For best performance , plant ‘ Blackbeard ’ in full Dominicus and mediocre to dry gardens . I have not seen any seedling yet , but free-base on my experience with similar cultivars , it ’s only a matter of time .
Two months of pollinator-pleasing blooms
‘ Summer Romance ’ woods betony(Stachys officinalis‘Summer Romance’)Zones:4–8Size:32 column inch tall and 25 inches wideConditions : Full sun ; average , well - drained soilBloom menses : former summer to late summertime ( rebloom)Flower color and sizing : smart Battle of Magenta , ½ inch long
‘ Hummelo ’ woodwind instrument betony ( Stachys officinalis‘Hummelo ’ , Zones 4–8 ) was the 2019 Perennial Plant of the Year — a well - deserved laurels for a great plant . So I matte up a little guilty last year talking a lot about another wood betony called‘Summer Romance ’ , which may very well give ‘ Hummelo ’ a trial for its money . smart Battle of Magenta - purple heyday make a starring show for about two months beginning in early summer , all the while providing a bounteous feast for butterflies and bee . The portly final flower bunch , 3 inches long and 1¼ inches wide , are more substantial than those of ‘ Hummelo ’ , and they stand magniloquent above dense leafy crest . While you could weigh on almost uninterrupted flowering up to icing , stems get shorter and myopic with each rebloom . The morose greenish , scallop - edged leafage are well-favoured and goodish from begin to end . I am blown away by its vigour ; from small-scale plants planted in fall , it reached full size the fall out summertime and has matched that vigor every year since .
A spectacular late-season show
‘ Wichita Mountains ’ goldenrod(Solidago‘Wichita Mountains’)Zones:4–8Size:36 in marvelous and 30 inches wideConditions : Full Lord’s Day ; ironic to fair , well - run out soilBloom period : Late summer to recent autumnFlower color and size of it : Yellow , 12 inches long
When‘Wichita Mountains ’ goldenrodis blooming , I ca n’t reckon at it without an earworm of “ Sky rockets in flight , afternoon delight ” working its way into my head . This goldenrod ’s floral show is unmatched : bottlebrush spikes of tiny yellow , daisylike flowers break loose in late summer , beckoning to bee , butterflies , and hummingbird . The prosperous plume are the top pes of the 36 - in stems , which are clothed in lithesome unripe leaf and form clumps nearly as spacious . Pairing ‘ Wichita Mountains ’ with a grass — almost any pasturage , really — and rosy or pink - flowered New England asters such as ‘ Vibrant Dome ’ or ‘ Andenken an Alma Pötschke ’ ( Symphyotrichum novae - angliaecvs . , Zones 4–8 ) is autumnal bliss . Heat- and drought - tolerant ‘ Wichita Mountains’—its succeeder growing on our green ceiling is testament to its adaptability — was notice in the rugged Wichita Mountains of southwestern Oklahoma , where the malarky comes sweepin ’ down the champaign .
Plentiful flowers all season long
‘ Imperial Gem ’ lavender(Lavandula angustifolia‘Imperial Gem’)Zones:5–9Size:22 inch tall and 45 inch wideConditions : Full sun ; well - run out soilBloom flow : former summer to former autumnFlower colour and size of it : Dark lavender , ¼ in wide
For years I bought into the story that lavender ( Lavandulaspp . and cvs . , Zones 4–10 ) were not hardy in Chicago . Then I remembered that I ply a test program , so why not prove it for myself ? In the end , we regain it was n’t just about insensate temperatures but adaptability to heavier soils that matter . Of all the lavender we evaluated,‘Imperial Gem’is the very good — systematically free - flowering , robust , and cold - hardy . Dark lavender flowers nestled in fuzzy dark royal calyces are colorful and plentiful from other summertime to early fall , and they provide victuals for a bevy of bees and butterfly . It ’s perhaps not a Provence - level lavender , but at 22 inches tall and a wide 45 column inch wide , ‘ Imperial Gem ’ is nonetheless telling . And the redolent grizzly - green leave-taking are the staring transparency for the amply colored flower spikes . English lavenders like full sun and free - draining land , although our six - year trial rise that ‘ Imperial Gem ’ and other lavender are more adaptable to clay land than we cerebrate .
