A creative, handmade garden

My name is Eric Peterson , and like most nurseryman I have been into gardening since I was a child . I know on a 3,900 - square - foot lot in Portland , Oregon ( Zone 8b ) . I started my garden when I move in about 12 old age ago . to begin with I was take the house and start acontainer gardenmade mostly of plant that I would chance on Craigslist for free . It made mother wit to have my plants in containers so I could take them with me if I move . I stay to deliver undesirable plants when people are quick to give them a new base . We ended up buying the theatre in 2017 and still have a lot of container plants .

I like to collect a mess of antiques and display them in the garden wherever I can . In this photo I displayed a lot of my desert plants , include a gilded barrel cactus(Echinocactusgrusonii , Zones 9–11),Euphorbialactea(Zones 10–11),Euphorbia ammak(Zones 10–11),Aloe‘Hercules ’ ( Zones 10–11 ) , andAloe arborescens‘Variegata ’ ( Zones 9–11 ) .

The varnished ice conservatory was made out of recycled brick and old barn wood . I made most of the stained ice windows myself . I sheer and fold the copper shingles with my mob . I made them in the shape of dragon scales . When I designed it , I wanted the luminance to be filter out to keep it cooler in the summer so it would be more of a livable place instead of your average overheated greenhouse that is too warm to enjoy in the summertime . It has taken about three years to make out this project .

I am always crowd the zone with tropical plant and vines likePassiflora‘Scarlet Flame ’ ( zone 9–11 ) . The ex phone stall in the background signal was quite a challenge to move in . I had to rent a Harold Hart Crane because it ’s cast iron and weigh 1,700 Lebanese pound . We had to plagiarize it over and under power line to move it to the house .

The humble garden is fence in by bigYuccarostrata(Zones 7–11 ) that were rescued when their previous owner station them for complimentary on the Nextdoor app . I economize them from the chainsaw that the possessor was go to take to them if no one wanted them . There are alsoAgave parryi(Zones 6–9 ) and largeAgave‘Blue Glow ’ ( Zones 8–11).Photo : Loree Bohl

On the rightfield there is a very large , very heavyAgave gentryi(Zones 7–10 ) , another rescued plant . It took a small team of Tennessean to help deliver this agave , as it consider about 500 pounds . In the back there is a hearth made out of recycled bricks and stone that were found for free on Craigslist .

The deliver agave is about 6 feet wide and 4 feet tall . Behind it you’re able to see aTrachycarpusfortunei‘Wagnerianus ’ ( Zones 7–11 ) . I ’ve planted seven of them on mysmall lot . I ’m hoping for a medallion plantation effect as they mature .

I added a good deal of lighting in thegreenhousein hopes of catching NASA ’s attention with a glowing stained glass greenhouse .

I ’ve hung three large chandeliers and a pair of phonograph saddle horn with oversized lightbulb for a steampunk effect .
