Favorite plants of the year
Hi GPODers , this is your editor , Joseph , and as we guide into serious winter here in my northerly Indiana garden , I ’m seem back at my favorite garden bit from the class that just passed . I hope it ’ll inspire you to do the same and to send your favorites into the GPOD so we can all get inspired and try out new idea for the gardening year in front !
Winter in my clime ( the edge of Zones 5 and 6 , with LOTS of coke ) is foresightful , sosnowdropsare of the essence ! This is one of 500Galanthuselwesii(Zones 4–7 ) I planted in the fall of 2021 , here bloom courageously through a late snow . My only sorrow is not planting more !
Also essential for surviving the long winter here is lots of garden indoors . This is mygrow - light setup . It ’s nothing fancy , just wire shelves and inexpensive LED shoplights from the ironware storehouse , but they let me grow portion and lots of plant through the winter to fill my Modern garden .

Andhouseplants ! I got intoAfrican violetslast yr , and this one , ‘ Bob Serbin ’ , just blew me forth with the profuseness of flush . It ’s fabulous to have when there is 3 foot of snow outdoors .
Once natural spring arrived , I go for lots of hikes and saw these beautifulwildflowers , our aboriginal hepatica ( Hepaticaacutiloba , Zones 3–9 ) . These early bloomers are native to the eastern half of North America . They were so beautiful that I was inspired to purchase some for my house garden . I ca n’t wait to see them bloom this spring !
And it ’s hard to bewilder Narcissus pseudonarcissus . This is my current favored variety , Narcissus‘Moonlight star ’ ( zone 4–8 ) , which make more efflorescence perbulbthan any other I ’ve grown . Bonus : itsmells great too !

I grew thesepeonies(Paeonialactiflora , Zones 3–8 ) from seed I hoard in a booster ’s garden a few age ago . I eff the single - flower form , both for the elegant look of fewer petal and because they stand marvellous without staking , unlike the grueling double - bloom forms .
Another wildflower sight that inspired me : wildlupines . This is the true specie aboriginal to the eastern part of North America , Lupinusperennis(Zones 3–9 ) . It ’s legion for many butterflies , including the endangered karner blue , which only feeds on the leave of this species . This rack was just thriving by a roadside . It ’s by all odds on my list to lend to my home garden next class .
And here ’s one of the longest - performing plants in my garden this twelvemonth : snapdragon ( Antirrhinumhybrids , usually develop as annual ) . I planted these in the bed between my sidewalk and the street this spring , and they have bloomed nonstop right through the summer and long after our first frost . I missed this plant when I lived in coastal Virginia , as it cause too raging there for them to survive the summertime . But here in Indiana they are hard to beat .
