Today we ’re continue our August tour of Harriet Robinson ’s garden in Maine with a look at her veggie patch . She says,“My sexual love is cosmetic gardening , mostly blossom perennial , but I finger that I should raise vegetables since I am into growing thing .
“ Certainly the quality of what I can grow myself is immensely higher-ranking to what I can purchase so I pass time planting , maintaining , harvest , and preserving my green goods . It is a pretty normal thing to do in rural Maine and a frequent topic of conversation ( “ How is your garden doing ? ” ) .
“ It is also really hard as weather condition and pests create problem . Two years ago I had zillions of cucumbers and last twelvemonth not a one . Last year I had too much wintertime squash and this yr both plant shrivel and die . This is my good tomato crop in years but the cucumbers are so - so .

“ Since the vegetable raised beds are in the same back yard as the formal garden , I adjudicate to make them pretty , although they ordinarily wrick into jungle . merge flowers help them see pretty and attracts good louse . I am completely constitutive in my methods and I rely heavily on compost and mulch ( newspapers covered with leaves and grass clip . All picture were taken on August 28 except the two from 2012 put in for equivalence . ”
For someone who just “ experience like she should ” grow vegetables , Harriet , your vegetable plot of land is stunning ! I love how you ’ve mixed in flowers , and I ’m soooooo envious of your tomato crop .

In 2012 the zinnias looked great with brussel sprouts, a combination I should repeat. That year they were visible from our deck. This is the bed with tomatoes and marigolds this year.Photo/Illustration: Courtesy of Harriet Robinson
