In a Vase on Monday. In the Pink.
Today , I thought I would create a vase using silver leaf and just the pretty , late blossoming pinks , Dianthus rupicolawhich comes from Sicily .
Dianthus rupicolaandCleome spinosa
alas , I am unable to use chasteness whether in a vase or in the garden . There are always so many other pretties that catch my eye . The minimalist factor seems to be omit from my make - up . So the vase got fill up with many other pinkish flowers and even bits of purpleness and lilac .

I went to a lecture on Saturday by Twigs Way , who is writing a book about the societal and ethnic history of the carnation . Who would have suppose that the littleDianthuscould have accrued so many layer of spiritual and cultural implication over the centuries ? Our knowledge of it dates from classical times , for it was cited by Theophrastus . Christianity adopted it as a symbol of Mary ’s binge and just to make trusted that it was a Christian symbolization disunite from Pagan beliefs , the flowers were also aver to represent nails that were used to nail Jesus to the cross . It is used widely in Renaissance nativity paintings .

Later the flower come to be associated with revolutionary motility . The Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974 , was so called , because not a shaft was fired and people add up out to adorn the rifle and uniforms of the army with carnations .

Oscar Wilde adopted the greenish carnation as a symbol of his sexuality . I learn him relaxing in Merrion Park in Dublin sooner this class . As you see he is showing us his carnation . What really surprised me is that the Book for pink as a color was only adopted in the 17th century . The Word of God hail from the pinked edges of the peak . Another surprise was the fact that the thought of pink for young woman and disconsolate for boy only became popular in in the forties . In the nineteenth century blue was considered much more womanly ; after all the Virgin Mary was describe assume patrician to show her pureness . Pink was a more soft shade of red and desirable for little boy as it was a paler shade of the martial lobsterback . I have to say this niggling boy does n’t look very happy in his pink dress . Anyway , as usual I digress . My pinkish arranging is in a cranberry glass vase and I have used a Chinesefamille roseplate to carry on the pinkish theme . The peak include a drab pinko rise ‘ Princess Alexandra ’ .

I have used two Salvias . One isSalvia‘Wendy ’s Wish ’ which flowers all summer . The other isSalvia involucrata‘Bethellii ’ which is late unfolding but faithfully hardy .

Salvia‘Bethellii ’
I used someDiascia personatawhich bloom all summer long and get bigger and better as the time of year expire on . The foliage is artemesia , santolina and pink variegated fuchsia . The feathery genus Pennisetum seedheads keep getting reuse in my arrangements .
I usedDahlia‘Rebecca ’s World ’ and cleome . I thinkCleome spinosais well cite . I have never break up it before but it is really thorny and uncomfortable to handle . I fetch up the arranging off with some colchicums . Cathy used some last week and I guess how reasonably they look . I had never think of picking them before .

These autumn pink shade are simply beautiful and your vase show them off so creatively ! And thanks for the info , Chloris , very useful !
I always determine something from your posts , Chloris ! amazingly , I ’ve heard before that pink was formerly associated with boys and blue-blooded with girl but seeing the boy in the portrayal in a pink dress will reinforce the fact in my judgment ( perhaps forever ! ) . The affiliation of green carnations and Oscar Wilde may also entrench itself in my memory . You have an awing aggregation of pinks in your vase – I specially like that rise .
Now that is a lot of pink and so much interesting info . I ca n’t get over the variety of flower still blooming there especially dianthus . I saw the statue of Oscar Wilde when I shoot the breeze Ireland … what a great sight in the car park . You made this vase a very special and interesting one .

I care it ! The cranberry vase – wow , I call for to await for one like that . It really showcases the color in the foliation and the blossom . I know to use Dahlias in system , even though I do n’t turn any in my own garden .
A beautiful arrangement and I very much enjoyed the historic titbit as well ! It ’s difficult to be a minimalist when there ’s so much mantrap to appreciate !
I take that somewhere recently about the pinked edge pay rise to the color , it makes me think of my mother ’s pinking shears . The Dianthus rupicola is endearing , and goes nicely with the other pink and lavender flowers in your vase . I enjoy your history entropy , and I love the Eugenia caryophyllatum fragrance of carnation .

Some great fact about pinks … it must have been a good talking to . There are so many lovely blooms in your garden , and brought together in your vase for more careful contemplation . Thanks for sharing .
