From fruits, to shrubs, to orchids

About a class ago , Melissa Leano Grosso shared trope of her garden in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona ( horticulture in the Desert ) . Today she ’s sharing images of her sister ’s garden in Hercules , California .

My babe , Lynette Leano Ravanera , subsist in Hercules , California , with her family . Hercules is a metropolis in the San Francisco Bay Area and is situated along the seacoast of San Pablo Bay . It is about 22 air mile from San Francisco , 10 air mile northward of Berkeley , and 20 nautical mile from the Napa Valley wine commonwealth .

Just like me , my babe has had a lifelong passion for horticulture . We have been blessed to uprise in the sexual love of our parents who have inspired and shared with us the joys of horticulture . Our mamma teach us how to grow and propagate beautiful unfolding plant , and our dad encouraged us to prove a veg garden .

My sister ’s garden in Hercules is a mixture of lush plants including all types of flowering plants ( both annuals and perennials ) , a veggie and herb garden fence in byfruit treesthat are kept small and espaliered , and vine as well as climbing rosebush . Her knowledge and recitation of ok gardening is so rewarding . There is always something to love and look forrard to anytime of the yr . All pictures in this post were adopt from her garden at different times of the class .

She has a variety of orchids , which are develop in thegreenhouseor in the ground , depending on the orchid character . TheseCattleyaorchids are so regal with their display of large showy and fragrant blooms , and when they start flowering , they are transfer indoors or to the terrace for enjoyment . There is always anorchidblooming every time I visit my sister .

In addition to theCattleya , her orchid solicitation includesPaphiopedilum(lady slipper),Phalaenopsis(butterfly orchid),Cymbidium(boat orchid),Dendrobium(sanggumay),Oncydium(dancing lady ) , miniature varieties , and more .

Gorgeous amaryllis(Hippeastrumhybrids , tender bulbs ) bloom with exuberance and beaut during wintertime or spring depending on when the medulla oblongata are planted . They are grown indoors or in the glasshouse . The beautiful Christmas cactus(Schlumbergeraspp.)bloom profusely each year , while the alien red orchid cactus ( Epiphyllumhybrid ) is always a pleasure to see . While bothSchlumbergeraandEpiphyllumbelong to the cactus family , they have unlike needs as liken to most cacti . In nature , these cacti uprise in tropical forests nestled in tree diagram crotches and decaying botany . In cultivation , they prefer bright indirect light , damp grime , and humidity . They do n’t like the cold . temperature below 35 ° F ( 1 ° C ) will wipe out them . The famed firedrake fruit is related to theEpiphyllum .

There ’s a variety of geraniums(Pelargoniumspeciesand hybrids , Zones 9–11 or as annuals ) andazaleas(Rhododedronhybrids , Zones 7–10 ) bordering the garden and providing color to it . Lynette grows dissimilar case of scented geraniums : stinker , Malus pumila , mint , strawberry , and umber . They calculate beautiful and smack honeyed when tot to blossom arrangements , which I do n’t waffle to put together when I visit .

The desert climb up , Adenium obesum , is preserve in the greenhouse during the cold months and brought out to the patio when it pop blooming in former summer . The thick pinkPlumeria , or frangipani , are fast growing , and the blooms are very fragrant . Both industrial plant belong to the dogbane family(Apocynacea),like the more commonoleander(Nerium oleander , Zones 8–10 ) .

Hedychium gardnerianum(Zones 8–11 ) is a spectacular tropic plant with heavily sweet-scented flowers and bold leaf . The flowers have yellow flower petal and a salient long red - orange stamen . It makes a unambiguously beautiful specimen plant . This was a tiny plant gifted to my sis by her children after vacationing in Hawaii .

The vegetable and herb garden provide fresh produce , and thefruit trees — which admit orchard apple tree , persimmon , pears , Citrus limon , and guavas — are very prolific . Thelemonsare so juicy that I pack up some of them when I chat to bring back with me to Arizona .
