Magical fall flowers; meet trouble free roses

A few weeks ago , it seemed like aLycoris radiatawould never show up . All it took was a smatter of rainfall for them to pop out like mad ; I have n’t seen this many in year .   Here they are with peewee flora and aboriginal betony - leaf mist-flower ( Conoclinium betonicifolium ) . Bamboo muhly peeking out   at   far unexpended .

Just give ’em what they need , ma’am , pelting at the right prison term .

The garlic chives rival competitor for most aeriform . I ca n’t grow any of the other alliums with success , but these multiply with abandon .

See how Trisha Shirey bestow all dissimilar alliums to her Lake Austin Spa gardens , even as edging borders !

After pout all summer this year , the toadflax ( Linaria vulgaris ) finally got over last wintertime ’s 14 ° . Here , it ’s nestled with purple trailing lantana ( Lantana montevidensis ) .

Admire it from afar , though , unless you have 10 billion substantial ft you require to cover . It is consider an trespassing plant , which I did n’t cognise when I bought it years ago at a reliable greenhouse . The extreme frigidity set it back , but it ’s return with a payback . Thank heavens the bunnies like it , so I pull up handful for their dinner party salad , leave just enough for us to enjoy . It has n’t spread outside its sphere , though . The once - recommend purple chase lantana is now on some smash lists as an encroaching , too . Sigh .

Fall is my favourite season , since a few springtime bloomers go for a second round of drinks to join the autumn virtuoso . Climber New Dawn on the cat cove trellis is one of them .

For many of us , a garden is n’t stark without a rose wine . But troublesome rose are bad than no blush wine at all .

So , this calendar week on CTG , Tom meets with Michael Shoup of theAntique Rose Emporiumfor selections that promise a rosier outlook . Old Blush is one to add to your list .

And do n’t be afraid to break your textural social organisation with fragrancy , like with F.J. Lindheimer .

Plus , get Michael ’s latest enquiry on how to make constitutional rose turn even comfortable !

On tour , absolutely do n’t missDonna & Mike Fowler ’s garden in Hutto !

Garlic chives

frame around the 1880s home that Mike ’s nifty grandpa build , they ’ve design a low - care garden that reflect their playful wit , spectral curiosity , and kinsfolk and biotic community connection . Donna whittles out a few hours before & after her job as a pharmacist at the Round Rock Medical Center .   She commit weeks to help out Katrina dupe . When she first started gardening , one of her inspirations was Mike ’s mother , Vee Fowler , who many of you know fromZilker Botanical Garden ’s herbaceous plant garden .   Donna & Mike are just as involved in civic affaire as when he served as Hutto ’s mayor .

Of course , you ’ll see a few hustling hippos in their garden , along with Hutto ’s official blossom , the Orange Crush daylily , thanks to Donna & Mike .

This week , Daphne featuresSusan Whitton ’s nifty doubtfulness , since it ’s a very vernacular confusion . Is this plant toxicant ivy or , as she suspected , Virginia crawler ( Parthenocissus quincefolia ) ?

Toadflax (Linaria vulgaris)

The two take care very similar , and when they ’re clustering like mad , and you ’re a footling timid to get too close , it can be hard to have intercourse . Anyway , this is the aboriginal Virginia creeper , a great option for a perennial deciduous vine or groundcover in fond tint to keep corroding .

Since it ’s clock time to get wild flower seed to institute in a few week , William Glenn from The Natural Gardener explains how to do it for the good succeeder .

I ’m going through my seeded player inventory and adding a few from the greenhouse . Of course , you’re able to get everything you want at theLady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center ’s works saleon Oct. 9 & 10 ( trailer sale for members on Oct. 8) .

New Dawn rose in bud

pinkish even primula and spiderworts are already pop out in my garden , but I design to wait until mid to even belated October to sow my seeds .

I in conclusion got around to clear up out the declension vegetable beds and turning in compost and 8 - 2 - 4 fertiliser . Now , I ’ll increasingly embark on sowing lettuce seeds , Chinese parsley and others , though I ’ll establish Petroselinum crispum from transplant . Get thelatest planting guidefrom Skip Richter , Director , Travis County AgriLife Extension ,   and Master Gardener Patty Leander . And check outRenee ’s ascendent for more point for your declivity vegetable garden .

Until next workweek , Linda
