It ’s January as I ’m writing this and the winter is in full swing . We already had snow twice and there could be more of it in the pursue twenty-four hours and weeks . It ’s quite cold too . temperature at nights ( and oftentimes during days too ) regularly drop well below freezing breaker point . That ’s not stop me from getting started with the raw gardening season though . Right now , I am in the middle of creating my annual vegetable garden blueprint for the upcoming yr . I am also believe of doing the first ( experimental ) planting …
What I ’m also already working on is farm , collect and saving my own parsley seeds . I have struggled with the bought ones for years . No matter how severely I have tried , I just could n’t get them to germinate – at least the vast legal age of them . I usually have to plant the whole bag just to get a handful of plants out of it . And it ’s not just me have this problem – I heard fellow gardener complain about it too !
That does n’t seem to be the typeface with home - saved parsley seeded player though . They seem to germinate much , much better . How I do know that ? Well , I notice it by gauzy blind luck …
You see , about two years ago a couple of parsley volunteers demonstrate up in a pot in which I grew tomato . I do n’t know how the seeds got there , but I decided to left the works there over the wintertime and see whether they would survive . I put the pot next to the bulwark on the south - facing balcony where I normally raise seedlings . The flora started growing quickly at the first signs of outpouring and I was able to get a harvest home from them very early in the season .
I cerebrate the plants would keep producing and we could keep harvesting them until the end of the time of year . But then , towards the remainder of April , they suddenly bolted . Their stalk were full form by the goal of May . They started flowering by the midsection of June . And by the end of October , the seeds were advanced for a collection …
For some reason I did n’t pull in those seeds though . The jazz shortly blew them off the plants . Some of them finish up in the same pot . Some of them end in the nearby pots . And some of them ended in patio shot and cranny . I did n’t sleep together it until those scattered ejaculate sprouted and works started to pop up everywhere – it was fascinating to watch those plants voluntarily show up in all those different situation !
The difference between plate - saved and store - bought seeds was obvious . While I was struggling to get the bought one up and running , I effortlessly get down tons of seedlings from the ones that came from a twosome of no - maintenance flora I will spring up in a pot as an experiment basically . That is why this season I am going to judge and duplicate the parsley semen - producing cognitive process I witnessed two years ago …
I keep the main pot and the plant that developed in it from those wind - dissipate seeded player . So , if all goes well , I should have the 2d generation of home base - produced seeds collected and lay aside by the ending of this horticulture season .
About two week ago I trimmed the plants heavily and removed all their erstwhile leaves . Then I moved the mountain into one of my miniature greenhouses . Icould have left it outside in the opened and frigid , and the works would probably survive there just fine despite the winter weather conditions – they were already snow - cover twice this winter and did just ticket . But I do n’t want to risk anything so I ’m giving them some excess trade protection …
I determine on them a few days ago and it seems that they are doing very well . Unless the weather warms up earlier than I expect , I am going to leave them in there until the end of February . Then I am going to move them out in the clear again . I ’m hop to get a harvesting or two from these plants as well somewhere in March . And once they bulge bolt , I am not going to bother them anymore and just let them do their affair . I ’m hop to have seeds in my helping hand sometime in fall . permit ’s see if I follow !
