Starting in mid - August every year , e - mail begins hitting my mailbox concerning bringing works indoors for wintertime .
Some of you may not be concerned because your plants are indoors all year long , others move their plants inside and outside seasonally .

I opt for leave plant indoors year - round if possible . The exception for me is some orchids like Phalaenopsis , bromeliads , and a few “ trial subject ” .

Over Wintering Mandevilla and Other Flowering Plants
Mandevilla is a beautiful vining flora , with pink flowers that have become popular during the bound . Many people have enjoyed their plant(s ) during the spring / summertime season and just do n’t want to “ suffer ” their plant to “ old gentleman’s gentleman wintertime . ”Overwintering Mandevilla bushes here !
How Long Can My Plants Stay Outside?
This expanse is a picayune more slippery , and you ’ll need to make the call . I can not give you a date on “ how long ” you may leave your dracaena plant alfresco , just some guidepost .
Each chemical group of houseplants will be somewhat different , and varieties within that grouping will vary also . Here ’s what I would advise .
The date is n’t important as the weather condition conditions are .
South Florida normally has two distinct times that have always been my predilection for turn . These are the months of October / November and March /April .
During those months , the day temperatures are still warm , at a temperature of 70 - 80 level . We normally see a drop in night temperatures of 10 - 15 degrees . This forces the plants to slow down and bring on very sturdy growth , not the soft summer growth that sometimes I palpate is “ over alcoholic . ”
Once the temperatures get down hitting a very consistent 60 - degree Nox , growth on most tropicals just stops . The works may be able to handle lower temperatures , but do n’t expect much outgrowth , if any .
So far , we have only talked about temperature , but there are other gene to take into thoughtfulness .
Wind
Just because the temperatures hit 60 , a nice breezy eventide can make the works “ feel ” much colder than it is . The wind will dry the plant and leaves out , and it ’s possible you may begin to see some damage .
Once the eventide temperatures lead off hit the 60 ’s regularly , I would look at go your plants indoors . A one - night or a few minute cold flak – and boom – you have a damage plant .
Before Moving Plants Indoors

Over a period of time , even if you ’re not using fertiliser , you may live a salt buildup in the soil . Leaching will aid remove those salt from the territory . fill up the pot with water and keep filling until you have run an extra 1/3 of a good deal full of water through the flora . Let the plant and soil enfeeble off before act the works inside .
The soil may be moist but not wet . This is very important .
Let the grime debilitate completely beforeputting the plant back inside . Do Notlet the flora sit in water . Now that you ’re move the plant indoors , it must begin the process of acclimatization to miserable calorie-free levels . depend on the plant you could expect some leaf drops – Ficus are Famous for this – and some new leave from a more stable temperature .
For those of you who fetch your plants inwardly and out every twelvemonth , my hat ’s off to you . Although I enjoy the temperature changes and the results the plants show in grow tough growth inside , I prefer a normal and uniform environment .
Plant Buying Tip:
During the winter months take a smell atDracaena marginata , it will take cool temperature indoors , is a piffling punk , and more available than Dracaena ‘ Massangeana . ’
