Fine foliage and flowers
Sally Matless is sharing some scenes throughout the year of her garden in Norwich , Vermont .
A satiny purpletulipglistens with piss droplet . How long do we have to wait until these start flowering again ? I ’m already over wintertime !
In this wonderful mixture of differentfoliage industrial plant , the dark majestic leaf ofTradescantiapallida‘Purpurea ’ ( zone 7–10 or as an annual ) andOxalistriagularis(Zones 7–11 or as yearly ) contrast attractively with the silver - pattern leafage ofBegonia‘Gyphon ’ ( zone 8–10 or as yearly ) and silver lacing fern ( Pterisensiformis , annual or houseplant ) .

This glow hen - and - chicks ( Sempervivum , Zones 3–9 ) wait like the cultivar ‘ Gold Nugget ’ , which move through various ghost of yellow and green come to with Orange River through the seasons , with the brightest colors in the cooler calendar month of the year .
When a jaundiced - greenish coleus ( Solenostemonscutellarioides , one-year , perhaps the mixture ‘ Electric Lime ’ ) combines with the electric purple foliation ofStrobilanthesdyeriana(annual ) , who needs flowers ? Both of these are usually grow as annuals , but cutting will root well in a glass of water to be overwintered on a cheery windowsill .
bid succulents such as this beautifulEcheveria(perhaps the variety ‘ Ruffles ’ ) ca n’t take Robert Lee Frost , but they are well overwintered indoors in cold climates and have leafage as beautiful as any flower .

Tuberous begonia ( Begoniahybrid ) have blossom that depend like blush wine . They do respectable in climates with coolheaded summer , and as the name suggests , phase tubers underground that can be overwintered to grow again next twelvemonth .
Rich purple whiskered iris ( Irisgermanicahybrid , Zones 3–8 )
A audacious waterlily ( Nymphaea , Zones 5–9 ) blooms in a water feature of speech . You do n’t have to have a pond to bask water lily ; many of the little hybrids will maturate and blossom just fine in a water - filled container as long as they have plenty of sunshine .

It is easy to see how ‘ Waterlily ’ genus Colchicum ( Colchicumautumnale‘Waterlily ’ , Zones 4–10 ) gets its name . The big , petal - filled blossom bloom in the capitulation , ingenuous of any foliage . The leaves will amount up in the spring before dying back in the summer . All summertime there is nothing visible above ground until these Brobdingnagian flowers down up at the end of the grow season .
Euphorbia×martinii‘Ascott Rainbow ’ ( Zone 5–9 ) has incrediblevariegated foliagefrom bound through fall . Even better , it is extremely resistant to deer and cony .
