Nic Bladen , the South African sculptor , jeweller , and botanist , is on a mission to maintain the Cape Peninsula ’s endangered flora . His delicate botanical sculptures , ranging from a billow kelp chandelier to a bronze - castAloe africana(roots and all ) , are created using an intricate drop off - wax cast technique that allows Bladen to catch rare plant in unique detail . Though he ’s always love nature , it was his years doing bridge and crown workplace as a dental technician — plus an apprenticeship in a bronze metalworks — that gave him the proficient foundation for his workplace .

Bladen and his married woman , artist Jane Epell , exist on a farm nest between mountain and ocean near Kalk Bay , about half an hr south of Cape Town . locate in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom — the modest but richest of the world ’s six such botanically distinct flowered regions — Bladen takes inspiration from his lush surroundings but is deeply disturbed by the apace increase numbers of endangered plants . “ My wish is to show the fragility of our flora land , ” he explains . work with Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden , Bladen has access code to some of South Africa ’s most endanger plants , “ many of which are now extinct in the wild or so obscure that no one be intimate anything about them , ” he articulate .

Although Bladen regularly shows his workplace in Cape Town and recently expose a new series of botanical carving and jewellery at New York City ’s Amaridian Gallery , he is about to embark on his most ambitious project to appointment . In cooperation with Baskloof Private Nature Preserve , fix on the edge of Table Mountain National Park , Bladen plans to mount up a comprehensive exhibition of mantle realm flora . “ Baskloof is the first place where I see that in one square pace you could find nearly 20 different species of plants , ” he say . He ’s been grant permission to glean one plant life coinage per calendar week for a year , and , finally , he hopes to document other regions of South Africa ’s unique floral heritage . Which , in the retentive run , Bladen believes , “ will serve as a will to the many plants disappearing from our clasp . ”
