SixOnSaturday

So that ’s it , meterologically speak , it ’s the last day of summer today . Downhill now to first Robert Lee Frost , so allow ’s revel the garden while still in something approaching its gaudery . Last weekend I expend time giving the garden its post - vacation tidy up and was much well-chosen with it afterwards . The flopping were staked , the untidy straighten out , the unplanted engraft , weeds were weeded , the parch water . I have plenty to do this weekend , although I have a half endurance contest on Sunday morning which will be postdate by an epic cat sleep so I may not get a lot done . Anyhow , time for Six on Saturday . Six things , in the garden , on a Saturday . Could be anything – a flower , a pest , a harvest , interesting leafage , a Book of Job to do , a weed , anything at all . Join in !

Here are my Six for this week .

1 – Salvia amistad . Originally the result of one pilfered press clipping , I have several of these plants now . This one is a little hemmed in by the surrounding plants – a eccentric of poor planting space subject , I am a repeat offender . It ’s about time I deal some more cuttings , in fact .

2 – Rose sawfly ( I mean ) . They look like caterpillars but are the larvae of an insect in the same category as bees and pismire . Wandering past Rose ‘ The Pilgrim ’ yesterday I noticed several leave-taking had been stripped . On near review I learn these critters . leave to their own devices they could have done some actual damage . If disturbed they roll into a clump and expend to the soil to agitate another day . The trick then is to have a hired man out ready to take hold of them . I did just that then dispatched them with my organic size 12 iron boot .

3 – Ricinus communis var . gibsonii . Not something I ’ve produce before , I was keen to try this year . I was expecting / hoping for 6’+ giant with enormously pre - historic leaves . I think my expectations were more fancy than realistic . The plants have all acquire reasonably well , but most are in the 4′ to 5′ reach .

4 – Eccremocarpus scaber , Chilean glory peak . I have a few of these , one of the more successful outcomes of this year ’s sight of mystery story seeds . Technically a tender perennial , it ’s usually grow as an yearbook in the UK . A climber , if I ’m favorable and it outlast the winter , it will grow back stronger next twelvemonth and could get to 3 m. This year it is heading towards 2 m and is help to cover my front garden fence .

5 – Gaillardia , blanket efflorescence . Special only really because I grew them from seed this class , these are a sunny low growing denizen of the front row .

6 – Digitalis lutea , small icteric digitalis . Clever these horticultural case , because this plant is modest , yellow and a foxglove . The full trifecta . Also grown from seed this yr , I had thought I was growing for next twelvemonth , and improbable flora to flush . Turns out d. lutea is a perennial , grow to 60 curium or so . At least it will be back with us next twelvemonth .
