Favorite plants that have come and gone
Today ’s photos come in from Jane Donelon .
As I stare at my snow - embrace garden , I enquire what will make it through this winter . The perpetually changing conditions of nature neuter my garden every year . I intend fondly of the many plant that I have loved and lost since I ’ve been gardening here in Maine for over 40 twelvemonth . Here are a few of my favorite from my loved and lost list , all unforgettable hoarded wealth that I palpate fortunate to have enjoyed , at least for a time .
One of my first clematis , Clematis alpina‘Helsingborg ’ ( Zones 3–9 ) , draped over an old honeysuckle above the wild flower path and make a extra delight each outpouring for many years .

The loss of the stunning white wood poppy , Glaucidium palmate‘Alba ’ ( Zones 5–7 ) , was made a second more endurable , as the lilac variety is still thriving .
While candelabra primula cultivate happily in my bog , the unusual and beautifulPrimulavialii(Zones 5–8 ) has never made it through a winter anywhere in my garden .
I was fortunate to have had the shiver of seeing — and feeling — the fuzzy buds of my low-spirited poppy , Meconopsis grandis(Zones 5–7 ) , push through the terra firma for four or five years .

For a few years the rare and elegant red lily , Liliumgrayi(Zones 5–8 ) , graced my garden , until it dead go away .
The delicate , fringedShortia galacifolia(Zones 5–7 ) warmed my eye for several seasons , and then it too was gone .
In early fall the lovely chicken bleed heart vine , Dicentrascandens , would surprise me by dangling down from trees above the forest path . Although it is listed as a Zone 7 plant , somehow it managed to survive in a protect spot in my Zone 5 garden for a number of years .

While I feel pitiful at each and every loss , as an older gardener with an overcrowded garden , I am also happy to have an open slur for some grand new treasure in my garden !
