I have always think that the near garden are those that make people felicitous and well-to-do . Sure , great garden look respectable , but they have to feel upright too . The gardens that I admire most are relax , easygoing to move through , and not too surd to exert . Pathsandstructuresmust be simple to navigate , while the plants selected must supply interest and serve a function without being bullies or prima donna . As a landscape painting architect , I tackle these issues of comfort and public-service corporation every twenty-four hour period . Here are seven pragmatic tips that have helped me produce enjoyable , liveable gardens for myself and my clients .
1. Allow plenty of elbow room
Patiosand decks are perfect spaces for outdoor entertaining . Plan for enough room to accommodate dining and mingling . Consider how many guests you ’re potential to host regularly , and plan on at least 4 straight foot of blank per soul . Outdoor dining means outside furniture , so get out a 3 - foot - wide margin of opened place around any furniture aggroup to allow for for comfortable circulation .
2. Provide firm and safe footing
Be certain that any paving bring home the bacon constancy . Avoid slick control surface or broadly localize pavers that coggle . Paving material such as milled granite or smooth out-of-door tile may not offer enough traction in rainy and wintry climates . Gravel paseo are fine , but be sure to habituate unsifted gravel . Unsifted gravel contains aggregates of various sizing , which compact firmly and provide a solid footing . sieve gravel is made up of aggregate of a standardised size of it , which do not constrict well and remain easy underfoot . Whatever material you use , ensure your paved airfoil are slimly sloped ( 1 to 2 pct ) to keep urine from pool on them .
3. Watch your steps
Outdoor stairs should ascend gently ; otherwise , they are apt to seem daunting . stone’s throw that have a rise of 6 column inch or less are the most comfortable . The run ( or profundity ) of each footfall plus twice the rise ( or height ) should rival 26 inches . So steps with a 6 - in rise would require a run of 14 in . If your garden stairway include more than 10 step , conceive landing place after every fourth or fifth stair to ease progress . Landings should be at least as mystifying as the stairs are extensive . A generous landing is an out-and-out necessary wherever a stairway commute direction .
4. Plan for growth
Give your plants elbow room to grow . If you must have a dumb , full landscape aright away , realize you ’ll postulate to relocate or remove some flora as they mature . you could also install quick - growing , short - hold out filler plants to temporarily bulge up your beds .

5. Create a comfort zone
Conifers and broad - leaved evergreens can offer your garden protection from coarse winds . with child - scale of measurement perennials or cosmetic pasture can make an instant privacy screen . A well - position Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree or tall bush border can bring home the bacon a shady haven in the heat of a summer ’s afternoon . Do n’t consider you have enough way for a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree ? Think again . With so many compact ornamental trees useable , there ’s one to go any property .
6. Give a wide berth
verify your pathways are wide enough for well-to-do passage . Nobody enjoys hale through narrow spaces , indoors or out . independent thoroughfares should be no less than 5 pes wide , enough for at least two people to take the air side by side . For secondary route where multitude walk single file , the breadth should be at least 3 feet . Keep in mind that the taller the planting or structures that flank your walk , the wider the path needs to be . improbable boundaries make any place feel more restricted .
7. Keep your distance
Place any industrial plant more than 30 to 36 inches marvelous at least 2 to 3 base back from the edges of walkways and patio ; otherwise , these spaces may feel unduly cramped and crowd . While you ’re at it , keep setaceous plants like rose ( Rosaspp . and cvs . , Zones 2–11 ) or biting plants like crown imperial ( Fritillariaimperialisand cvs . , Zones 5–9 ) out from eminent - traffic areas .
