Top Ten October Blooms.
Towards the end of each month I wish to post about the flowers which are currently yield me the most pleasure . And I always make out it when bloggers join in and share their favourite . I choose ten but even if you only share one special blossom it would be adorable .
If you love your garden it is large to have special flowers to look forward to and to cheer you each calendar month no matter the atmospheric condition . In October I always bet onward to nerines and I love them so much I would like to have a special glasshouse dedicated to them . Of of course thebowdeniihybrids bloom outside quite happily but those withsarniensisin their vein need frost protection . These are the ones with the hopeful , most shimmering colours . The first to bloom for me is the shining reddened , tenderNerine sarniensis . My other tender unity are still in bud , so they will be amongst my November favourites . These bulb are summer abeyant so need to be kept reasonably wry or they will waste . Watering is increase once the blossom spike appears and bear on until the leaves pop off down .

Nerines have a long autumn season because different varieties bloom at unlike times . Nerine bowdeniistarts blossom outdoors in former October . If it has a sunny side without any competitor it shortly clumps up .
Nerine bowdenii
Nerine bowdenii‘Stefani ’ is so delicate looking with its shell pinkish flowers but it is hardy too . Here it is in my sundial seam .

Nerine bowdenii‘Stefanie ’
as gorgeous is the hardyNerine bowdenii‘Isobel ’ which has really dark pink flowers . I keep it in the nursery because I love the contrast of drear and pale pink and white when the nerines are all blooming together .
Nerine bowdenii‘Isabel ’

Nerine bowdenii
I love this striped one which does n’t seem to have a name .

My favorite isNerine undulata , it is the most delicate of all . A friend who is a nifty plant person gave it to me more than twenty years ago . It is said to be hardy and I mature it outdoors for several years . But I have had it in a mint for long time now and each yr I get more blooms , this year there are 43 and they are like curly spider .

Nerines can be grow from seed and then you may get your own gorgeous cross . I should have lots by now if I had n’t been so careless and let the semen dry out . This happens well as you sow in them on the Earth’s surface of the compost . I have this one in bloom which I sowed about 4 years ago . It is a endearing soft colour , a bit like ‘ Stefanie ’ but prettier I think , but then I would , as it is my baby .
This is last yr ’s seedling from a bloodless nerine , ‘ Ella K ’ . I ca n’t wait to see what colour the prime will be .

Another October favourite is blooming in the greenhouse correctly now , or it was until today when I institute the potty into the house to show off when friends amount to dinner party . Bessera elegansis a very easy to raise , you plant the bulb in pots in April . The flowers are exquisite , precious coral , jewel- like drops .

The October garden is brought to life by colourful aster . I love all daisy flowers and these starry symphyotrichums , as we have to call them now are an absolute joy , even if they do have to put up with a giddy new name . A set of people are put off them because of mildew but if you avoidnova - belgiihybrids this does n’t seem to be a job . Symphyotrichum novae - angliaehybrids are the ones to reckon out for . Here are a few favorite .
Chrysanthemums are next month ’s treat and although I have several in prime now , I am not going to croon over them until November when floral treats become scarcer . But one Chrysanthemum has been in bloom for a while and so has to be included in the October blooms because its white white flowers light up the October margin . It isArctanthemum articum . It used to be a Chrysanthemum but we are not allowed to call it that now . Whatever its name , it is well worth looking out for as it is a beauty .

October isSchizostylistime , except we have to call themHesperanthanow , but that ’s OK , it ’s light to import . I find them a bit foxy because Suffolk is very dry , especially this year and they need lots of weewee to do well .
Hesperantha coccinea‘Sunrise ’
I hump persicarias and have quite a few different ones , although likely not as many as my Persicaria - enthusiast Quaker , Cathy atRambling in the Garden .

But one I am delight at the moment is a hulk annual . It isPersicaria orientalisand right now it is much taller than me at about 6 understructure magniloquent . Its common name is ‘ snog me Over the Garden Gate ’ . It is light from seed but slugs adore it and my first bunch of seedlings was munched clean to the grease . Fortunately three more germinated later and these are now look wonderful . Next year I would like wads of these and perhaps for playfulness I will have some by the garden logic gate .
Persicaria orientalis
Another tall growing annual isLeonitis leonurus‘Staircase ’ which grows tall and good as the summertime goes on . It looks tremendous in my tropical garden . I have take some cuttings to see if I can keep it going after the frost .

Other flora calculate better and well as the season go on are the Abutilon which used to live in pots . Given the freedom of the grime they have get going harebrained and I really do n’t have anywhere to accomodate them now that they have become so grotesque . I do n’t think they will be hardy . They have such pretty bell - shaped veined flowers .

I also have lovely yellow daisy flowers in the tropical bottom which are pot industrial plant here but easy from cuttings . They are stout in Cornwall but probably not here . One is the simple daisy flower ofEuryops pectinatus , the other isEuryops‘Double Sunshine ’ . Both of them fell into my hand in a rather irregular way I ’m afraid .

Oh near , here I am at number ten and it is difficult to choose a darling amongst the respite of the October beauty . I mean I will go with a slight knapweed type industrial plant which has a still charm and is a joy because it blooms so lately in the year and insects love it . It is calledSerratula seoanei . I can never think of how to spell it as it has rather too many vowels . It looks endearing in my Mediterranean garden .
Serratula seoanei

So that ’s my ten , please link up me and write about your October favourite . In the meanwhile , here are a few that I did n’t include in my list even think they are all beauties .

Gosh , that ’s a lot of plants still blooming for you – marvellous ! Your Nerine compendium is lovely . Nerines remind me of Lycoris – their blush are nearly superposable , although the foliage is different and they bloom at unlike times . Gorgeous !
I always envy those Nerines . I was so mad when I determine ‘ Stefani ” at last twelvemonth ’s surrender plant cut-rate sale at The Huntington Gardens but no sooner had I planted it than someone or something inexplicably trim back or chewed off its leaf – in any grammatical case , I have n’t control any star sign of it this year . Your aster accumulation is impressive , as is that beautiful Bessera , which I ’ve never pick up of .
With my Dahlia pinnata and zinnias now tucked aside I do n’t have much to extend in price of flowers except for my Senna and Barleria so I ’ll have to take a pas on joining in with a top 10 leaning of my own again this calendar month .
