And it’s hardier than you think
In 2020 , as part of the annual trials at the University of TennesseeGardens in Jackson , we grew ‘ White Flame ’ salvia , which was charge to us as a sample plant . It was an excellent performing artist and received our “ just of Show ” laurels at the remnant of the season . As with other “ annual”salvias , we expected it to die off over the winter . But to my swell surprise , it returned the next year — as it has every year since , despite our temperatures dipping below zero on social function .
If you wish salvias in world-wide , you ’re going to love ‘ White Flame ’ . The plants are shaggy-coated and compact , with complete clean 4- to 6 - inch flower spikes appearing in abundance from the time of planting until a pour down freeze . The tubular lily-white efflorescence that emerge from mealy white , dense calyxes are bee magnets , and they are also enjoyed by hummingbird and butterflies . Unlike many of the newer vegetatively make “ annual ” salvias , this selection does not pedal in and out of flush over the course of the summertime in the South . ‘ White Flame ’ salvia loves the heat and does n’t ever slow down . Another fillip is that the fading pale flowers do n’t flex a dingy color or distract from the beauty of the works , as is plebeian with some blank - blossom plant .
‘ White Flame ’ is a hybrid of long - fortify sage ( S. longispicata ) and mealycup salvia ( S. farinacea ) , but it looks mostly like a mealycup salvia on steroids . For a real show - stopper , brace ‘ White Flame ’ with other intercrossed salvia such as ‘ Mystic Spires ’ and ‘ Blue Chill ’ . It also combines beautifully with most sunshine - loving perennials and can be used in large mixed containers , where its prospicient efflorescence spike playact as the “ thriller . ” ‘ White Flame ’ would be a corking add-on to a cut - flower garden too , since it produces an abundance of virgin white flush from leaping through fall . Although it is only reliably wintertime hardy to Zone 7 , I have Quaker in Zone 6 who have had ‘ White Flame ’ income tax return in their garden where it was planted in good - draining soil and in a protected spot . Even if you live in an country where it does not survive the wintertime , it is worth grow as an annual . If the works embark on to look unkempt during the longgrowing season , give them a light shearing and an practical app of fertilizer to renew the growth and flower production . As with most salvia , ‘ blank Flame’is drought tolerant once establish , and cervid almost always void it .
