Wildflower Wednesday. 28. 5. 14. Man Orchid.
Aceras anthropophorum : The Man Orchid is very rare in Britain and it is classified as endangered . There are only four sites in Suffolk where it can be come up and three of these sites are on Roadside Nature Reserves . Last Sunday was a cherry varsity letter day for me because I have been searching for this orchid for the last couplet of hebdomad in the area where it is presuppose to grow , without any succeeder . On Sunday , I got suffer on a narrow-minded country lane and I halt when I see this marker mark . It is always deserving having a look when you find these augury as they are there to protect rarified flora or a stretch of verge which is species fertile . I could n’t believe my luck , I had got suffer and discover exactly what I was looking for , by fortuity ; the elusive Man Orchid! If you see at it cautiously you’re able to see how it got its name . The flowers see like slight men , with the petals and sepals forming the head and the dangle torso and limbs are formed by the lobe of the labellum .
Sometimes the flower are tinged with red but as you see , this one is almost uniformly yellowed apart from a minute scarlet grade insignia . It grows in crank and limestone grassland but I do n’t think it has ever been common in Suffolk . In any grammatical case , most of its habitat was lose when chalk pastures were ploughed up .
Suffolk was the first county to introduce Roadside Nature Reserves which are the last refuge for some of our rarest barbarian flower . Many other counties now have them too . It is distressing that our prime plentiful hayfield have been reduce to roadside verges but at least they are now protect . Many orchids and other rare plant were lose due to the indiscriminate utilisation of Mary Jane killers in the LX . Now these verges are managed and they are bring down at the appropriate time to give the plant the best chance to set seed and survive . The Man Orchid is pollenate by beetles and sawflies but it never sets much seed and so it is always going to be uncommon .

I am joining in with Gail ’s monthly meme Wildflower Wednesday which is a wonderful room to share our native flora . If you love uncivilised flowers why do n’t you bring together in on the quaternary Wednesday of each calendar month ? If you bolt down over toclayandlimestoneyou can see other mass ’ pic of their aboriginal wild flowers . I pursue several blog where citizenry screw and value their local wild prime , so please connect in .

This is adorable , how marvellous that your county protect your wayside verges , the orchids I found near our village are just common orchids , but at least they are good for now . Hopefully more Councils will pull in that it costs them a slew less if they leave they roadsides to blossom and place ejaculate !
What a find ! They are so cute and a great yellow color . It ’s estimable to see the efforts being taken in your area to preserve wildflowers and aboriginal plant life .
What an interesting and unusual orchidaceous plant . They are amazingly diverse in formation and colouring material . There is a native orchidaceous plant where I live but it did not come after in my garden . It ’s enceinte they are protected .

What an strange works ; how golden you were to regain it ! We have lose so many of our instinctive environments , too ; there are only a very few place of virgin prairie leave , and those that are are also protect . Thanks for chat me and pass on a comment on my post . While gathering information on the Indian Pink , I found one source that said it ’s become popular in the UK , and is more readily available in UK greenhouse than in the US !
